Books on Prescription
One in four of us will experience emotional or psychological problems at some time in our lives. Research shows that good quality self-help books can be very effective in helping people cope.
If you have experienced problems such as anxiety, depression, stress, anger or bereavement books on prescription may be able to help.
You can obtain a prescription for a relevant book from your GP or your self-help facilitator. You can then take your prescription along to any library in the borough and borrow the book for as long as it has been prescribed.
If you're not a library member, you can join when you bring in your prescription - it's very quick and easy. If the book you need isn't in stock, you can collect it from another library or have it delivered to your local library for free. Library staff will treat your prescription as confidential.
A range of self-help titles are available, covering a range of issues. They're all written in a straightforward style and are recommended by leading psychologists and counsellors.
To find out more about how to contact a GP and see a self-help facilitator see NHS City and Hackney or call 020 7683 4000. You can find out more at your local library.
