Ourmala - Helps refugees and asylum-seekers rebuild their lives

Ourmala gives refugees and asylum-seekers a safe space to breathe and stability through Yoga. We help survivors of violence and oppression, and the wider community, improve their wellbeing and find the strength to move on with life.

We provide weekly yoga classes in safe spaces (at a number of locations) and offer a pro-active signposting service, English support class and more. The yoga we teach is based on Ashtanga yoga (physically demanding) and Mindfulness (meditation techniques).

How Yoga works:
Yoga helps to co-ordinate the breath, mind and body to encourage balance, both internally and externally and promote feelings of relaxation and ease.

Benefits include:

  •  Improved efficiency of lungs and cardio-vascular system
  •  Improved posture, flexibility and strength
  •  Improved concentration
  •  Improved blood circulation
  •  Enhanced feeling of well-being
  •  Better quality sleep
  •  Reduction of anxiety and depression
  •  Reduction of physical pain (short term and long term)
  •  Reduced sense of isolation

There are also many 'added value' aspects to Yoga, such as the friends you make along the way and the sense of optimism and mental focus that increased regular practice brings.

Who we work with and referral process

We mainly work with refugee and asylum-seeking women registered with the UK Home Office because they have fled to the UK following atrocious violence and oppression in their homelands.

We only take women by referral, so we are sure they are receiving support in other areas of their lives. We also provide Yoga sessions for the wider community. So, if you're interested in Yoga for your centre or group, we'd love to hear from you!
